To rats! On #WorldRatDay I pay tribute to my Prince Derek (on left shoulder), King William (not pictured) and all the rats that have gone through vigorous testing for science, medicines*, field work and so much more.

I grew up in Vietnam, and was separated from my older brothers from a young age…so I really wished to have younger siblings. After lots of discussion, my parents finally allowed me to…have a rat! We decided that we would check with a laboratory in our city if we could ‘save’ two rats. My mom walked right in and asked, and that day, I came home with Prince Derek and King William (from the Swan Princess ofc!).

Prince Derek came back to Thailand with me. He was my first love. He taught me so much, but most importantly, he taught me about regret. I should have let him run around more. I should have played with him more. I should have shared more fruits with him. The day he passed I had never cried that much in my life. From that day on I promised to do everything FULLY. No half-assing anything in life. To Prince Derek. To the rats. To a life of no regrets 🩷

*In this day and age we have alternatives and no longer need to test on animals (we really shouldn’t it’s so cruel!).

มารีญาพาเจ้าชาย Derek กลับประเทศไทยด้วยกัน เขาคือรักแรกของเรา เขาสอนเรามากมาย แต่ที่สำคัญที่สุด เขาสอนเราเกี่ยวกับความรู้สึกเสียดาย ที่เราควรจะปล่อยให้เขาวิ่งไปรอบ ๆ มากกว่านี้ เราควรจะเล่นกับเขาให้มากกว่านี้ เราควรจะแบ่งปันผลไม้กับเขาให้มากกว่านี้ วันที่เขาจากไปมารีญาไม่เคยร้องไห้มากนักในชีวิต ตั้งแต่วันนั้นเป็นต้นมา มารีญาสัญญาว่าจะทำทุกอย่างอย่างเต็มที่ ไม่มีอะไรครึ่งๆกลางๆในชีวิต ถึงเจ้าชาย Derek ถึงพวกหนูทั้งหมด สู่ชีวิตที่ไม่เสียดาย 🩷

*ในยุคนี้ เรามีทางเลือกอื่น (เท่าที่เรารู้นะ) และไม่จำเป็นต้องทดลองกับสัตว์อีกต่อไป (เราไม่ควรโหดร้ายขนาดนั้น!)
