ทุกๆ 5,000 ปี ประตูระหว่างมิติจะเปิดออก ในมิติหนึ่งซึ่งไม่ได้ประกอบด้วยธาตุ ดิน น้ำ ลม และ ไฟ มีสิ่งมีชีวิตรูปแบบหนึ่ง ซึ่งเป็นปรปักษ์กับพลังงานและชีวิต เฝ้ารออย่างอดทนเพื่อคอยโอกาสทะลุประตูจักรวาล สู่การทำลายล้างมวลชีวิตและแสงสว่างให้สูญสิ้น ไม่เว้นแม้แต่มิติที่เรียกว่าโลกมนุษย์ ที่ซึ่งครั้งหนึ่งเคยเป็นแหล่งเก็บรักษาธาตุทั้งสี่เอาไว้

เหตุการณ์นั้นได้มาเยือนอีกครา เมื่อดาวโลกเข้าสู่ศตวรรษที่ 23 ขณะที่ทางการกำลังหารือเรื่องการรับมือกับสิ่งมีชีวิตชั่วร้ายจากนอกโลกที่ใกล้เข้ามาเยือน ผู้ประสงค์ดี สาธุคุณคอนิเลียส (เอียน โฮล์ม) บาทหลวงผู้สืบทอดจากกลุ่มคนที่เคยพบมนุษย์ต่างดาวชนเผ่าที่ฝากฝังธาตุทั้งสี่เอาไว้บนโลกครั้งอดีตกาล ได้ออกความเห็นตามตำนานที่สืบทอดกันมาว่า หากสร้างธาตุที่ห้า นั่นหมายถึงพลังทำลายล้างความชั่วร้ายที่จะมาเยือนทั้งปวง

หลังจากทดสอบพลัง อำนาจการรวมกันของธาตุทั้งสี่ ผลสัมฤทธิ์ของธาตุที่ห้ากลับกลายออกมาเป็น ลีลู (มิลลา โจโววิช) แต่ก็ไม่ทันการ เหล่าต่างดาวชนเผ่าชั่วร้ายเข้ายึดครองธาตุไปแล้ว ลีลูจึงต้องไปชิงกลับคืนมา ด้วยความช่วยเหลือจาก คอร์เบน ดัลลาส (บรูซ วิลลิส) อดีตทหารมือดีที่ผันตัวเองเป็นคนขับแท็กซี่ที่ลีลูรู้จักโดยบังเอิญ แม้ไม่เต็มใจนักแต่คอร์เบนก็ช่วยเหลือลีลู เพื่อภารกิจพิทักษ์โลกไม่ให้ตกเป็นของต่างดาว

แต่อุปสรรคไม่ได้มีเพียงเท่านั้น ลีลูและคอร์เบนยังต้องประมือกับคนหวังผลประโยชน์จากเหตุการณ์หน้าสิ่วหน้าขวานนี้อย่าง มิสเตอร์ ซอร์ก (แกรี โอลด์แมน) ที่ทำทีเลือกข้าง เสนอขายอาวุธชั้นดีแก่เหล่าต่างดาว โดยแอบแฝงจุดประสงค์แท้จริงเอาไว้ไม่ให้ใครรู้ เห็นทีคราวนี้งานนี้ผู้พิทักษ์โลกต้องเจอศึกหนักเสียแล้ว

In 1914, scientists gather in Egypt at the site of an event that transpired centuries earlier. Aliens, it seemed, arrived to collect four stones representing the four basic elements (earth, air, fire and water) - warning their human contacts that the objects were no longer safe on Earth. A few hundred years later (in the 23rd century), a huge ball of molten lava and flame is hurtling toward Earth, and scientist-holy man Victor Cornelius (Ian Holm) declares that in order to prevent it from destroying the planet, the same four elemental stones must be combined with the fifth element, as embodied by a visitor from another world named Leeloo (Milla Jovovich).

However, if the force of evil presents itself to the stones instead, the Earth will be destroyed, and an evil being named Zorg (Gary Oldman) will trigger the disaster. Despite her remarkable powers, Leeloo needs help with her mission, and she chooses her accomplice, military leader-turned-cab driver Korben Dallas (Bruce Willis), when she literally falls through the roof of his taxi. Dallas, who is, in turn, helped by Prince/Arsenio clone, Ruby Rhod (Chris Tucker).

Unfortunately, Evil is being assisted by Mr. Zorg, who seeks to profit from the chaos that Evil will bring, and his alien mercenaries. Right now, only the Fifth Element can stop the Evil from extinguishing life, Leeloo, Dallas and ... have to fight--to save the Earth!
