ผู้ก่อการร้าย เพย์น (เดนนิส ฮอปเปอร์) วางระเบิดไว้ในรถประจำทางของลอสแองเจลิส เงื่อนไขที่โหดร้าย ก็คือต้องทำให้รถวิ่งด้วยความเร็วเกิน 50 ไมล์ต่อชั่วโมงอยู่เสมอ หากรถวิ่งช้าลงกว่านั้นเมื่อไร ระเบิดจะทำงานทันที แจ็ก (คีนู รีฟส์) เจ้าหน้าที่ตำรวจของลอสแองเจลิส จึงต้องรักษาความเร็วของรถไว้ตลอดเวลา
เงื่อนไขอีกประการ คือ หาก แจ็ก ปล่อยผู้โดยสารคนใดออกไปจากรถที่กำลังวิ่งนั้น เพย์น จะกดสวิตช์ระเบิดเช่นกัน หัวหน้าตำรวจ แมกมาฮอน (โจ มอร์ตัน) และตำรวจนักสืบ แฮร์รี่ (เจฟฟ์ แดเนียลส์) พยายามอย่างสุดความสามารถที่จะช่วย แจ็ก ปลดวัตถุอันตรายนั้นให้ได้
Bomber Terrorist Payne's (Dennis Hopper) elevator plan backfires, so he rigs a bomb to a LA city bus. The stipulation is: once armed, the bus must stay above 50 mph to keep from exploding.
Also if LAPD Officer Jack (Keanu Reeves) tries to unload any passengers off, Payne will detonate it. Capt. McMahon (Joe Morton) as Jack's superior, and Det. Harry (Jeff Daniels) supports Jack helping him try to defuse the bomb.
