Three Dots is about the plight of women left alone after the war of Afghanistan. Without the protection of a husband and family, they are powerless and easy prey. A single widow, living in a remote village in northwest Afghanistan near the Iranian border, struggles to feed her three children.

After a six-year drought and unable to cope, she is forced to marry a brutal old warlord, a khan, who immediately sends her to Iran as a courier for an opium smuggling ring. The ring is busted and she is arrested.

This realistic portrayal of a woman’s struggle against overwhelming odds is by Afghanistan’s youngest filmmaker, a 24-year-old woman who taught herself cinematography by studying manuals smuggled in from the West. Within a year of the Taliban collapse, she was able to produce a short film, described as how Afghan women were like living dead.

Impressed by her work, director Siddiq Barmak helped finance her first feature, Three Dots, which won top prize at the Afghan Film Festival. Roya Sadat states, In the past, women couldn’t be what they wanted to be, only what men wanted them to be.
