Ginvanni is an aging, prominent attorney, used to success in the court room and in bed. When he meets the irresistible and seductive Sara at a party, anticipating another conquest, he rather finds his life confused and transformed by the insatiable pleasure and passion she gives, then arbitrarily retracts with almost sadistic indifference.

The affair is not inconsequential for Sara, who discovers a capacity for caring that supersedes her characteristic cold inaccessibility and detachment. When Giovanni leaves his wife for her, Sara rejects him and ge becomes incurably ill. Her dissociation from Giovanni immerses her in a timeless dream world of nostalgia and memory, filled with Giovanni's powerful presense in which she must confront her suppressed ablity to love.
